LAKE HUGHES, Los Angeles County — California’s final 2026 Integrated Water Quality Report distinguishes several potential water-quality issues at Lake Hughes rather than treating the waterbody as uniformly clean or unsafe.
For mercury, the State Water Resources Control Board’s factsheet concludes that available evidence does not justify placing Lake Hughes on the Clean Water Act’s 303(d) impaired-waters list for that pollutant. The finding is based on a limited assessment that included fish-tissue information; it does not amount to an unrestricted statement that all fish are safe to eat.
Other water-quality questions remain
The same reporting record includes a historical eutrophication issue — excessive nutrient enrichment that can affect aquatic conditions. The report’s pollutant-specific listings and historical dates require careful reading. A decision not to list for one chemical must not be described as a clean bill of health for the entire lake.
Residents should consult current environmental-health and fishing-advisory information before swimming, fishing or consuming locally caught fish. Historic data in an integrated report do not establish the lake’s exact present water level.
